Obesity is emerging as a health epidemic in Boise, Idaho and around the world. Enjoying Idaho recreational activities or Boise social events can be hard to do when you're carrying those extra pounds that rob you of your energy and self esteem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity is rapidly spreading across all regions and demographic groups and Idaho is not omitted from these rising numbers. An estimated 97 million adults in the United States are overweight or obese. That figure represents more than 50% of the American adult population.

What is Morbid Obesity?
A person who generally weighs at least 100 pounds more than his or her ideal weight or has a BMI of 40 or more is diagnosed as morbidly obese.
The National Institutes of Health report that morbid obesity may considerably reduce life expectancy and is associated with an increased risk of developing conditions or diseases such as:
Dieting, exercise, and medication have long been regarded as the conventional methods to achieve weight loss. For many, this can translate into what's called the "yo-yo syndrome," where patients continually gain and lose weight with the possibility of serious psychological and health consequences. Recent research reveals that conventional methods of weight loss generally fail to produce permanent weight loss.
Weight Loss Surgical Treatments - Gastric Bypass and Gastric Banding
There are two types of surgery for the purpose of weight loss. One is malabsorptive, a surgical weight loss procedure that shortens the digestive tract by bypassing most of the stomach and part of the small intestine, allowing less food to be ingested and the absorption of fewer nutrients and calories. This procedure is called Gastric Bypass.
The second type of surgical weight loss is restrictive. This surgery reduces how much food the stomach can hold. Restrictive surgeries can include Stomach Stapling/Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG) or a minimally invasive procedure call Gastric Banding. Both surgeries restrict how much the stomach can hold, limiting food intake, yet allowing for the digestion of nutrients and calories in the normal fashion.
Your Weight Loss Motivation
While weight loss surgery is an effective treatment for morbid obesity, the pounds do not come off by themselves. Weight loss surgery is an aid to support you in achieving lasting results by limiting food intake, reducing appetite and slowing digestion. However, your motivation and commitment to adopt a new lifestyle are extremely important for long-term weight loss. New eating habits must be adhered to for the rest of your life. Exercise is an equally important component of a changed lifestyle.
Idaho Weight Loss Seminars and Support Groups Schedule
As part of our commitment to patient care and good clinical outcomes, we offer several patient education opportunities. Patient seminars are designed to give prospective patients the opportunity to learn more about obesity surgery options such as the LAP-BAND System and speak with both clinical professionals and patients.
Patient support groups are primarily geared for patients who have already had obesity surgery, but can be attended by prospective patients as well.
The surgical weight loss seminars provide a critical forum for patients to share experiences, have questions answered, and gain encouragement from their peers.
